Child Support

The Right of the Child

In Colorado, both parents are legally obligated to provide financial support for their children. Importantly, the court views child support as the right of the child—not the parent.

The Colorado Child Support Guidelines determine support amounts based on each parent’s income, the amount of parenting time, and specific allowable expenses. However, calculating child support isn’t always straightforward. The complications in calculating child support arise in determining income or potential income, and other exceptions to the guidelines.
